How AI is shaping the future of journalism
Journalism throughout the world has begun to apply AI with various methods. The media and journalism are starting to take advantage of AI that can influence their work and explore various approaches to start adopting this new technology into their fields.
With expert advice from editorial room leaders from Europe, the US and the Asia Pacific, the team compiled a survey of more than 20 questions, ranging from technical (which AI technology has been adopted?) To ethics (do you know AI bias, and how do you avoid it? ). Over the past few weeks, editorial rooms from all over the world have completed surveys with contributions coming from every continent. Their response will be processed and published towards the end of the year, to illustrate how the media currently uses – and can further benefit from AI technology.
The responses received were quite diverse. Most respondents agreed to adopt this AI-based technology. No one hopes a machine can replace journalists. The aim of using AI is to replace routine work with a machine which frees up more time for journalists who will be able to focus more on other tasks like investigation and engaging readers.
Today, newsrooms have begun to consider the use of AI but only a few have implemented it. For most companies, the use of AI technology is still in an experimental phase where some journalists are still sceptical of this technology. Others tend to be curious about how AI can affect the processes and workflows in the newsroom that at any time can face new disruptions.
Important things began to change in the news industry. The challenges and opportunities of new technology reflect the deeper meaning and mission of journalism in this era of artificial intelligence. As a result, many assume that it is important to explore the latest innovations to continue to drive and enhance the existence of the news business.
Algorithms and machines can improve journalism performance, however, AI cannot work on its own and users cannot expect AI to take care of all our problems. To optimise the function of AI, in whatever sector we are in, is to combine human intelligence and AI to create the perfect result.
